Corporate governance is not about ticking boxes or keeping investors happy. Good governance, properly applied, really can help boards to run their companies to ensure maximum profitability and long term sustainability.
“People can talk about corporate governance like it is something alien, when in fact it is integral to the future of companies.” Anita Skipper, Global Head of Corporate Governance, Aviva Investors (Financial Times 7 October 2010)
This conference takes a practical look at the issues affecting the boards of FTSE listed and AIM companies on a daily basis. Issues like:
Paul Moore was the former Head of Group Regulatory Risk at HBOS, one of the UK’s largest banks with assets in 2007 of over £660bn, over 74,000 full and part time staff and profits before tax of £5.4bn. When the banking crisis hit, HBOS had to be rescued by a forced acquisition by Lloyds Banking group supported by government capital and liquidity support.
Paul was the only senior risk and compliance executive in UK banking sector to speak out publicly in the aftermath of the financial crisis about what he saw from the inside of a bank. His influential evidence to the UK Parliamentary Treasury Select Committee in February 2008 was widely publicised in the media world-wide and led directly to the resignation of Sir James Crosby who was then the Deputy Chairman of the Financial Services Authority.
Now advising regulators, financial services and other firms on risk management, governance, regulation and business ethics, Paul will use this session to re-examine his experiences and pull out the lessons to be learned. His analysis and expertise encompasses all the elements of effective risk management, governance, regulation and business ethics: not only structure, framework and process but also, the often-neglected and more important aspects of organisational culture and the professional standards and competence of the risk and compliance managers themselves which has often been a key issue.
